Clearing the South Winterbourne

Martinstown Flooding (200x150)

The South Winterbourne Community Action Flood Group has done a great job of organising volunteers to help clear the river bed and ensure the smooth flowing of the water, which has meant that there hasn’t been any major flooding this year.  The Group has asked the County Council for £5,000 to provide financial support to pay for the bed to be dredged once a year.  DCC have agreed to do this for 2014 but haven’t got the money in future years due to major cuts in central Government funding.  I am trying to find other sources of funding, but it may be necessary for the local Parish Councils to fund this.  It would mean an extra £10 a year or so on residents’ Council Tax bills but this is surely worth it to reduce the chances of major flooding happening again.
